Resist the Urge to Build an Infrastructure That Isn’t Needed

Why do you want to become an entrepreneur? Far too often, entrepreneurs are drawn like moths to a flame and to concepts that sound cool and fun rather than to ideas that will make money. This leads to a variety of painful errors, such as building an often unnecessary state-of-the-art website, creating expensive signs and business cards, buying fancy computers, impressive office furniture and the list goes on and on. These steps are taken instead of focusing on key elements such as selling.

In the early stages of your business, you need to focus on what will immediately contribute to the success of your business. It won’t matter how professional your business looks if no customers ever see it in action!

Don’t Get Stuck in a Fantasy, Hollywood Version of Entrepreneurship

Entrepreneurs often get sucked into the fantasy world of creating a business. In this world, having the symbols of success are seen as the first step towards “getting serious” about building a business. This couldn’t be more wrong. The first step towards building a successful business is making sure that you have a concept can actually generate revenue and then taking steps to sell that idea. All the other “stuff” can wait.

If something doesn’t directly impact your ability to sell, then it isn’t vital to your business. A great idea, great sales people (which includes you!) and an idea that people will give you money for is what “it” is all about! So skip the fancy business cards, the impressive computer, the office space you can’t afford, the expensive office furniture and all the other trappings. Focus on the core elements of your business.

Why Waste Time Building an Infrastructure You Don’t Need?

Building an infrastructure that you don’t need is a waste of precious resources including your money and your time. Focus on the basics and get revenue flowing in. After that, you can begin to focus on luxury items that may, or may not, help you impressive future clients.

I started my first business 22 years ago. In the time since, I have established over a dozen successful businesses. Today, I am 100% confident that I could start almost any business and generate revenue without spending a dime on a website, business cards, brochures, high speed internet, a computer, an office or just about anything else.

Obsess Over What Matters the Most – Paying Clients!

If you are real entrepreneur, you can start your business without these things. The simple fact is that most of the things you think of as being “necessary” for starting a business, in the end, just aren’t. Down the road there will come a time when these items are necessary and even of critical importance, but that times comes much later.

In the beginning, skip obsessing about your infrastructural needs and instead obsess about getting as many paying clients or customers as humanely possible. After all, you became an entrepreneur to make money, right?
