Here is some real advice on self-improvement. Your life won’t get any better. Sounds depressing, right? Well, there is a catch. Your life won’t get any better if you keep doing the things you’ve always done. Your life CAN get better, though. You just have to decide to make the necessary changes to your behavior. Let’s talk about how to make it happen.
Stop Waiting for “One Day”
“One day” is a great day. It’s the day we will actually do all of the things we’ve been meaning to do to get the most out of life. The problem is “one day” never comes. We keep putting off the things we know we need to do until the perfect moment comes.
The reality is life is just life. There is no perfect moment. YOU make your own perfect moment when you decide to act. Your life won’t get any better until you realize right now is the perfect moment to get started.
Only you have the power to make your life better. External forces will never make you happy. Happiness and fulfillment come from within. If you don’t love yourself, you can’t get that love from anywhere else.
Learn to Love What You Do
“Do what you love” sounds like great advice. It is to a degree, but it traps people into thinking their next job is the one that is going to make them happy. There are two types of people when it comes to work. The first group of people will always find something to hate about their job.
They’ll start a new job and everything will be great for a few months. Then they’ll start to get annoyed. The second group can find something to love in any job. It doesn’t matter what they do, because they don’t draw all of their happiness from work. It allows them to look at the positives in their work situation.
Find the Positives
It doesn’t stop with work. Learn to be happy with the situations you are in today within each area of your life. Take bankruptcy for example. Most people get depressed when they go through bankruptcy. They start questioning all of the decisions that made them lose all of their money.
Bankruptcy isn’t the end of the world. In fact, there are some positives. It helps you get rid of consumer debt you wouldn’t have been able to pay. It provides protections that simply weren’t there hundreds of years ago.
Do you know what happened when you ran out of money 1000 years ago? They died. There was no safety net. Keep in mind that things could always be worse.
This same concept applies to relationships. If you keep focusing on the negatives in people, you’ll never attract and maintain a healthy relationship. There is an order of operations to everything in life. Your life won’t get any better if you focus on the negatives. You have to first assign empowering meanings to the things you focus on if you want to take positive action.
There is a law of equilibrium that states your happiness will always sink back down to the level of internal happiness you set for yourself. We get exactly the amount of happiness we think we deserve. You’ll never truly enjoy external events if you don’t decide you deserve happiness.
